Plantains are from the same family as bananas. Unlike bananas, plantains are used as vegetables and can’t be eaten raw. They grow in tropical climates, and are widely consumed in the Caribbean and some Latin American countries.
They have different flavour depending on how ripe they are. When they are green, they are used in savoury dishes like patacones, as soon as they have black spots half ripe they can be used in sweet and savoury dishes. When they turned black, they become sweet and are mainly used in desserts.
